Larry's story:
Larry Prout Jr. was born on June 11, 2001 at the University of Michigan's Mott Children's Hospital. He has endured 114 surgeries due to severe spina bifida, cloacal extropy, short guy syndrome, club feet, mild CP and a massive omphalocele, as well as many other complex medical diagnoses.
Larry has nearly died countless times, but with the life saving care of his University of Michigan CS Mott Hospital medical teams, he continues to fight every day.
Larry lives with ongoing, life threatening complex medical issues and pain every day. He is frequently in the hospital due to complications from surgery, gut and kidney issues, gram-negative rods, sepsis, pseudomonas, MRSA and other blood infections, pneumonia, and complications that go along with his many diagnoses.
With support from his family, friends and community, Larry has been able to live a productive and fulfilling life. Larry is involved with several non-profits by fundraising, public speaking, volunteering and as a board member. Larry has been a community volunteer working hard for many of our local nonprofits and his own nonprofit, raising hundreds of thousands of dollars since he was 14 years old. He is also a volunteer at Mott Hospital and has done several public speaking engagements and role-playing, as well as having served as a Hope Ambassador, been a member of the Teen Advisory Council and Patient Family Centered Care Committee as well as volunteering for the Office of Patient Experience.
Larry and his family know the hardships of many hospital stays and recoveries at home, and the financial burden this can bring. Because of the help and support Larry and his family have received over the years, the Prout's wanted to give back by helping families with sick children and young adults.
The Larry Prout Jr (The Bear) Courage Fund will help with gas, food, utilities, car repairs, clothes and many other basic necessities, that become hardships when a family is facing the medical crisis of a loved one.
The Larry Prout Jr (The Bear) Courage Fund has been created to aid C.S. Mott Children’s Hospital patients who have current and ongoing life-threatening health issues and are receiving care which affects the overall financial situation of their families. (Not including medical bills or treatments).
Larry Jr says: "Some days are very hard. But the best way to feel better is to never give up, never lose hope, help others, always be grateful, and remember that every day is a gift!"
The Larry Prout Jr (The Bear) Courage Fund is a 501(c)3 #87-3726445 nonprofit.
